Painters in Hawke’s Bay

Nicole and Tim run Bay Decorating, a painting team based in Napier. We paint homes across Hawke's Bay - Napier, Hastings, Havelock North, and out to the wider region when the right job calls for it. Interior, exterior, older villas, new builds. Everything we do rests on one promise: show up when we said we would, prep the job properly, and quote with no surprises mid-way through.

What we paint across Hawke's Bay

For Hawke's Bay homeowners, most of what we paint splits across four categories.

Interior painting.

Whole-house interior repaints and single-room refreshes. We vacuum at the end of every day and plastic-tape doorways during heavy sanding so the dust doesn't travel — especially important when you're living in the house during the job. See our interior painting page. ‍ ‍

Exterior painting.

Weatherboards, fascia, eaves, and windows — prepped individually and painted with a brush and roller, not sprayed. Hawke's Bay throws coastal salt, strong summer UV, and humidity variance at exterior paint, so we choose paint systems per wall based on substrate and exposure. Sprayed finishes are also hard to touch up later without re-spraying whole sections. Our exterior painting page covers the full prep sequence.

New build painting.

Filling and sanding every nail hole, prepping the exterior cladding before the first coat, and using paint systems that meet building-code compliance. We paint brush-and-roller not sprayed — so when a tradesperson comes back later to install something, or you touch up a knock during move-in, the finish matches.

Heritage and older homes.

Sash windows, Art Deco trim, multiple paint layers built up over decades — the quirks that turn a standard repaint into real prep work. We've painted a lot of heritage homes across Hawke's Bay and know what each one actually needs. If you want someone to take meticulous care of your home, this is our strength — and where our paint shaver, re-puttying, and Resene CS-tier conversations come in. More below.

HOW OUR QUOTES WORK

When Nicole puts a quote together, she breaks it into line items: windows, weatherboards, eaves and fascia, water blasting, prep, and topcoats. You see the cost of each piece separately — not a single lump sum.

Water blasting is often split out because some clients prefer to do it themselves — and we're happy with that. Paint is always included in the quoted price. If we find something during the job that wasn't in the original scope — rot under a weatherboard, a failing substrate — we stop, show you, and quote it separately before doing the work. No surprises at the end.

Why Hawke's Bay homeowners choose Bay Decorating

If you're comparing painters in Hawke's Bay, a few things separate Bay Decorating from most other options:

  • Nicole and Tim (the owners) are both on tools every day — not a sales team handing you off to a crew you've never met.

  • Quotes are broken down line-by-line with paint always included, so you know exactly what each part of the job costs before it starts.

  • When a job calls for a builder, plumber, or rot-repair specialist, we have a trusted Hawke's Bay trades network to bring the right person in — so you're not coordinating multiple contractors yourself.

  • 13 Google reviews at 5 stars so far, all from real completed jobs.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Most exterior repaints sit between $8k and $20k+ in Hawke's Bay, with prep condition the biggest variable — not the paint itself. A new-build exterior costs less than a full villa strip-back. Our cost guide breaks down what drives the range.

  • Line-item pricing — windows, weatherboards, eaves and fascia, water blasting, prep, and topcoats. Paint is always included in the quoted price. If scope shifts during the job (e.g. hidden rot), we stop, show you, and quote it separately.

  • Yes, often. Sash windows, Art Deco trim, lead-paint handling, and re-puttying are standard parts of our villa work. See our villa and heritage painting page for more detail.

  • A typical villa exterior takes 2–3 weeks — roughly two weeks of prep and about four days of topcoating with a 2-person team. New builds are faster; heavy strip-back jobs take longer.

  • Yes. Nicole does the site visit and quote in person, so you meet her before committing. Tim is usually on site during the job. Call 027 251 1014 or email hello@baydecorating.co.nz.
