Window and Joinery Painters in Napier & Hawke’s Bay
We restore and paint timber windows and joinery on older and heritage homes in Napier and across Hawke’s Bay. If your putty is cracked and falling out and the paint is coming off in sheets, that’s work we know well.
We’ve been painting homes as Bay Decorating since 2019, and we’re rated 5.0 from 16+ Google reviews. Call us on 027 251 1014 or ask for a quote.
What we paint
The window and joinery work can require the most skill to do well. You can have just the windows done, or the lot, inside and out.
Windows: timber frames and sashes, including the sash windows on older villas
Exterior joinery: wooden doors, French doors and exterior trim/ detailing.
Interior joinery: skirtings, scotias, architraves, decorative elements and interior doors
For the walls and the rest of the house, see our exterior painting and interior painting pages.
What’s included
Your quote covers the work below, and paint is always included in the price.
Paint stripping/ Removal - Stripping back to bare timber, wherever the old paint has failed or if there there’s lead present.
Sanding/ Preparation - The most important part, done with the windows shut until we reach the reveals and sashes, to keep the dust out of your house.
Priming - the timber window before the new putty goes in, then again over the top for full protection.
Re-puttying - We do this wherever the old putty has cracked, perished or come loose.
Topcoats - We use quality paint from Resene to finish and ensure your beautiful joinery stays protected for years to come.
The weathered edge, and saving the original windows
We finish the putty line with what we call a weathered edge. The window is taped so the paint runs about a millimetre onto the glass, which seals the little gap between the glass and the frame.
Rainwater then runs down the paint instead of creeping in behind the frame, which is where it quietly does the damage over time. It also leaves a nice and tidy, dead-straight line. Where the gap is wider than about a millimetre, we fill it with gap filler or caulk instead. We do this on every home with wooden windows.
If your original timber windows are worth saving, we’d rather restore them than see them replaced.
How it works
Get in touch - and we’ll come and look at your windows and joinery.
Quote - we will send you a quote itemised by area. You will see the prep, scope and timeline, so you can compare painters line by line. A windows and joinery job can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months, depending on how many windows there are and their condition.
The job - We get in and do the work, we respect your space, keep the site tidy and check in with you regularly.
Final inspection - we finish with a quality check and the touch-ups. The job isn’t finished until you’re happy with it.
What it costs
It’s hard to put a price on windows and joinery without seeing them, because it depends on the state they’re in, how much prep they need and what type of window they are. That’s why we do free, no-obligation quotes.
As a guide, here’s a few examples of how the price of painting the outside of a house changes with the joinery and its condition. The figures are for a single-storey, three-bedroom weatherboard house of about 100 m² with a tin roof, and they exclude GST:
Good condition, aluminium joinery, light sand and repaint: about $10,000
Good condition, wooden windows, with window prep added: $14,000 to $15,000
Deteriorated, wooden joinery, some lead, serious stripping: $16,000 to $20,000
Badly degraded, full strip back to bare timber: $25,000+
The jump from the first line to the second is the window prep and re-puttying, which is a real chunk of extra hours. Our guide to what it costs to paint a house covers what else moves the price.
Examples: Chester Place, Kennedy Road and Longlands
The Chester Place home had been through a full renovation. We painted the interior first, the walls and then the skirtings, scotias and architraves. Then we came back for the exterior timber joinery: every wooden window and the French doors, with the windows re-puttied as part of it. There’s more on the Chester Place project page.
We also did a full timber window restoration on two heritage villas. At Kennedy Road in Napier, each window got a full chemical strip to take off the old built-up paint, a light sand, an oil-based primer and two finishing coats. At Longlands in Hastings, the original sash windows stayed, and we painted them with the weathered edge.
Common questions about window and joinery painting
There are more answers on our frequently asked painting questions page.
-
No. Our joinery work is timber only: wooden windows, doors, sashes and trim.
-
Yes, for timber windows. Sound putty is what keeps water out of the timber, and once water is in, paint won’t save it.
-
It depends on how much has failed. Once about 40% of the old paint is flaking, we count it as failed and take it back to bare timber. Short of that, we scrape off what’s loose and sand. Your quote says which your windows need.
-
We strip it off before any sanding starts. Lead paint can’t be sanded safely, because the dust can affect the health of the people living in the home, especially children. We test for it with Resene lead test kits when we quote, and set the scope to suit. The Kennedy Road villa was a lead paint job.

We’ll tell you early. Rotten timber just turns to mush and paint won’t hold on it, and timber repair isn’t something we do in-house. We work alongside a builder who can come in at short notice at a reasonable price, and we always get your okay and have you meet him first.
